3D Printing Will Decrease Costs for Tools, Dies and Molds

The Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) looks at new technologies and works with industry to bring innovations in additives and composites over into industry. Their efforts include technologies that increase deposition rates of 3D printing, new materials for 3D printing and new applications for 3D printing.

The director of the facility, Bill Peter, explains that one area of focus is tooling for composites. The United States lost 37 percent of the tool and die industry in less than a decade, and ORNL believes that 3D printing can help bring this work back from overseas because it can reduce lead time from six months to a matter of days. Continue reading more today!
